Insulin
Australia has very strict quarantine laws when it comes
to insulin so for this reason, bovine based PZI is not approved for use in cats.
Lantus (aka Glargine) and Levemir are two long lasting insulin choices available
for felines. In Australia, all insulin requires a vet's prescription. Click here
for more information on
insulin types that are available in Australia.
Diabetes Australia is a helpful website for Aussies, with links to all of the
state branches when you click on "Shop" in the menu.
Food
A proper species appropriate diet is important for all living beings, but
especially so for diabetic cats. Here's a great article (and website) written by
an Aussie vet, explaining the
Need to Return to the Basics for our pets. Making
a well balanced
raw food diet
for your Aussie cat might be a better choice if
possible as pet food labeling is poor and it is almost impossible to know
exactly what ingredients in canned food are.
The manufacturers are not required
to list ingredients specifically. For example: the label says "cereal" but you
have no idea whether it is corn, rice, wheat, etc.
Here is a link to
Natural Pet Store which carries a number of tinned low carb
food brands.

Low Carb Treats
Many pet shops sell pure dehydrated jerky, (beef, lamb, roo, chicken, duck) that
is often used as a treat for dogs but can be a good low carb treat for cat. You
just need to break it up into small pieces. It is important to check labels and
verify what you are buying is 100% pure meat with nothing else added. Bonito
fish flakes can be purchased in most Asian grocers.
Raw Food
Anne
Jablonski's Raw Recipes (both Bone-In and Bone-Out for short term feeding).
Dr. Lisa
Pierson's Raw Recipe.
If you want to make your own well-balanced raw food, but do not have a grinder
or do not wish to grind yourself some butchers in Australia will agree to do the
grinding of meat and bone for you. Its best to ask at a smaller more
personalized butcher.

Supplements
Finding pure supplements in Australia for FD cats can be a challenge.
Supplements should be as "pure" as possible with no fillers or additives not
suitable for FD cats. If you need further assistance when it comes to selecting
and sourcing supplements, please post on forum.
Glucometers and Supplies
Meters and supplies can be purchased in pharmacies or from
DIABETES
AUSTRALIA. Costs vary but you can get them from $25.00 and up. Pet owners
with diabetic animals can become members of DIABETES AUSTRALIA for $27.00 per
year which sometimes allows for a 20% discount when buying supplies. When
selecting a meter, what to look for is one that takes the least amount of blood,
and the test strips are the least expensive.
Syringes:
1/2 unit syringes are not available in Australia but can be purchased online
from the US or the UK. There have been no issues bringing them into the country.
It is best to consider both sites at your time of purchase as the fluctuating $
and the postage offers at the time can have a large effect on the final cost.

Australian members have ordered from
Diabetic Promotions
in the USA because they will ship overseas. The cost is doubled due to
shipping costs, HOWEVER being able to work with the accuracy
having 1/2 unit marks on syringes
is priceless.
EliMedical
is a Canadian company who also ships syringes to Australia (use their online
order form to request a quote for shipping before ordering).
* Strips - approx. $50.00 per 100
* Lancets - between $8.50 and $12.00 (the cheapest - Unilet Comfort Touch by
Owen Mumford in a purple box)
* Some meters/strips/lancets are available online.
Recommended is Pharmacy Direct - delivery is fast and costs are competitive.
They do NOT SELL Insulin Syringes.
