South Africa Info

Know what local prescription laws are with regards to obtaining insulin and syringes, International and a State by State listing for the US.

Glucometers

Accucheck Active is fairly reasonable and easy to use.
Price is approximately R160 in a pharmacy, although it will cost much less at Dischem.
Test Strips average between R210 and R250 for 50 in pharmacies. They cost approx R150 from Dischem.

Contour Plus is another option and is easy to use. R 129.95, test strips R 195.55 per 50.

INSULIN

Lantus (Glargine®) - with prescription dispensed by the vet.

Detemir (Levemir®) - with prescription dispensed by vet.

Caninsulin - dispensed by the vet (Insulin of choice by vets)

Neutral Protamine Hagedorn (NPH) (Protophane®, Humulin N®) - with prescription dispensed by vet.

If your vet is willing to give you a prescription for it, then Levemir can be purchased from Medirite and probably from Dischem too. I got a free insulin pen when I purchased the Levemir cartridges from Medirite but for fine dosing the syringes are preferred.

The purchase of insulin is not available over the counter in South Africa.

Syringes

UI100 syringes with half unit markings are available from Medirite for much less than if purchased from most vets (about R370.00 for 100 syringes).
UI40 syringes are widely available from veterinarians as Caninsulin seems to be the insulin of choice (a U40 insulin).

Misc. supplies

Ketostix Strips 50's (Urine Test Strips) - R 80.00 from Dischem

FOOD

There are no appropriate imported or local canned commercial foods available to purchase in South Africa for practicing Tight Regulation. If you choose to import from Singapore or Hong Kong you will have to check on the cost.

There are providers of raw foods available which we consider the gold standard for our obligate carnivores.
