Know what local
prescription laws are with regards to obtaining insulin and
syringes,
International and a State by State listing for
the US.
Insulin
Insulin is on prescription. Lantus is becoming the most
commonly used insulin for cats now, but many veterinarians
still prescribe Caninsulin and even Minidab (tablets to
stimulate the insulin production). Lots of vets are not
updated on FD, and unfortunately there obviously are still
vets out there who give bad (or very bad) prognosis for
cats that are diagnosed FD. PZI is not available.
Syringes
Syringes are on prescription in Sweden.
There are only syringes with whole unit marks on the
Swedish market. Syringes with half unit marks can be
imported according to the Swedish Customs:
"Import of medicaments via postal services or equivalent,
is allowed from a country within EEA under the following
conditions:
- The medicament is for the receiver's personal use
- The medicament is approved in the other EES-country and
has been obtained in a pharmacy or equivalent in that
country
- The medicament is approved and not on prescription in
Sweden, or, for prescripted medicaments, has been
prescribed by a certificated prescriber within the
EEA
Each consignment of such kind can contain the amount of the
medicament corresponding to one year's consumption at the
maximum. The receiver must be able to confirm that these
prerequisites are met." (freely translated)

Ask your veterinarian to write a certificate, or a
prescription that states that you should have syringes with
half units. Problem might be finding a company that will
ship to Sweden though.
Other
equipment
Common glucometer is Bayer Contour. All medical supplies
(meter, lancets, syringes, test sticks etc) are sold in
Apoteket (the pharmacy).
Home testing is commonly taught direct at the diagnosis,
but not by all veterinarians.
Food
Veterinarians recommend veterinarian diabetic food (Hill’s,
Royal Canin etc), both canned and dry.
The awareness of right feeding of FD cats is quite high in
Swedish cat forums, many people object to the
recommendations from the vet to feed veterinarian diabetes
food. There are people who know about Dr. Hodgkin's and
embrace her knowledge in general, but not many seem
familiar with TR.
There is a very good commercial food; Mjau. Contains no
carbs, is cheap and sold almost everywhere. Some cats may
get stomach problems with the canned Mjau, then the tetra
packs usually works fine. Some of them contain a bit sugar
though (in the jelly), so be sure to read the labels and
not pick those. Another source for low carbohydrate food is
Bozita at www.zooplus.se
If you prefer a larger selection of foods Zooplus Germany
or UK is suggested. We have a temporary list of foods
available in our Heads to Tail thread which had been
checked for low carbohydrates. Ordering through our
affiliate program you will receive a slight discount.
